Our coastal ridge estate site sits three miles from the Pacific Ocean and is the most westward vineyard in Mendocino County and the coolest in our portfolio. The soils are of ancient ocean floor origins. The three blocks selected for the Radiolaria bottling hail from the Zeni & Yellowhound soil series which are lighter in color and more porous in structure with the Yellowhound being the rockier soil of the two. These sandy and rocky soils contain radiolarian chert and quartz. The chert we find in these soils is formed from ancient deep sea plankton called Radiolaria that dropped onto the sea floor millions of years ago. These lighter soils are expressed here with brighter red savory fruit and effusive aromatics along with savory forest and mineral tones interwoven with wild flowers, fir tips and savory mushrooms. The palate begins with vibrant red fruits of pomegranate and wild raspberries but soon becomes a savory mix of black chantarelles, savory herbs and wet stones. A very distinctive terroir driven, gorgeous coastal Pinot Noir.  A classic bottling.
